check if you are getting fuel, spark and then if both are good it is timing

it sounds like the problems i am having with cracker and that is fuel pump

take the fuel line off the carby andhave someone turn it over and see if fuel is getting up there

if not work your way back down the fuel line to find the problem

cheers

Take the distributer cap off , turn the ignition on (so the lilghts on the dash come on) and open the points using something non conductive (otherwise it might bite you) , if you see a spark between the contacts of the points than you have power to there . Next take a plug out , hold it against the metal of the head and have someone try and start the engine , if you had spark at the points (last test) but not at the plug then adjust the points gap . If it still doesn't spark at the plug check your rotor button for corrosion , check the little carbon rod is still in the centre of the dist cap that touches the rotor button and check your leads . Also check the coil low tension cables ("normal" wires ) are attached as well as the coil lead .
Does the ign light come on when you turn the ign on ?

yer the ignition light comes on...

i spoke to a friend and we think i might have ran out of fuel... well enough not to get pumped to the engine. our drive way is on a far angle. it stalled and made like a puff... i have since poured 5 more litres of fuel in... but still didnt start.....

sorry that it seems im always havin problem.....

cheers for the help

Well , evein if it was out of fuel I'd imagine with an ether spray like start ya bastard it'd fire and run till the motor used the ether . You said it tried to start did it run but die or cough and splutter ? Have you got an electirc or mechanical fuel pump ? If you've checked the spark and it's working then pull off the fuel line to the carb and turn the ign on briefly , if it's electric or crank it slightly if it's mechanical and see if fuel comes out , the pump may have been on the way out and is having trouble pushing the fuel up from empty .

just installed a whole new ignition barrel ??? like 2 days ago

This will probably sound really obvious but did it run before and since you fitted the ign barrel ?

G'Day Harvey69,
Change your ignition coil, they can still give a weak spark in open air but nothing when under compression inside your cylinder.

ok will install a new ignition coil..... the ignition barrel works because i started it in the garaged .... it just randomly stalled.

???

but i am unable to clutch start it either.......

it just like trys to start but just dies???

is it not able to get petrol to the engine or is that usually because of electrics

That could be either still , do the checks outlined above and it'll tell you which way to look , either fuel or electrical . Otherwise we'll just keep suggesting you replace things which will get expensive in the end , find which system is having problems and then we'll have a better idea .

Have you checked the timing :?: As you cannot get it going at the moment you will probably need to staticly set the timing and then use a timing light to check it once you get it going.
If the timing/ distributor hasn't been changed since it went don't touch the timing, it will just make more problems.
Do check you have the plug leads on in the right order though firing order 1,3,4,2 with the dizzy rotating ANTI CLOCKWISE.

You are now getting fuel into the fuel bowl of the carby :?: So it's not a fuel pump problem :?:

How to set you timing close enough staticly...

rotate the engine to Top Dead Centre on no 1 cylinder(a pencil or bit of wire down the spark plug hole will help here) with both the exhaust and inlet valves closed. At this point if you take the cap off your distributor the rotor should be pointing to the lead running to spark plug no 1. If this is not the case rotate the dizzy until the rotor is pointing to the contact for spark plug no 1. should normally be pointing to about 1 o'clock I think :?

Generally timing way out or plug leads in the wrong order will give spluttering and kick back type symptoms
