Post subject:  Weird tapping sound?

I have a problem which has me stumped  . When I go over 80km/h there is a tapping sound ( like a stone in the tyre ) coming from the drivers front end some where. It is speed related no rev related as it also does it in neutral ( rolling down a hill ). It does not matter if you are turning or not it is still there. I thought it may have been an outer CV but they do not make any noise at slow speed going lock to lock.
I have had the front hubs pulled apart twice now and still can not find a cause, I am now thinking it could be the inner pot joint or diff.
Sorry for the long post but any help would be great.

Pete

Had similar problem a few years ago. Turned out to be a tooth in the diff that had chipped. Eventually the crown wheel picked up the chip and broke off two teeth. Result new crown wheel and pinion and engine out.

If it was this, would I be able to tell without pulling it apart?
Also wouldn't it make the sound at all speeds not just over 80km/h?

Check your uni joints.

I had a tapping when a U-Bolt nut came lose and the metal started hitting the the gearbox casing....it wore away a nice groove into my gearbox casing.

I have got pot joints not uni joints.

Mine cut in and out around 50K, no idea why - but possibly to do with the weight on the gear. Try backing off and then applying the power again. When I did this the noise went away for an instant. I only identified the problem when it all went bang!!

I think I isolated the noise, swapped both front wheels over and the noise followed. So it is either the tyre or the rim. At a quick glance they both look fine but will wait and clean the rim up and have a ggod look at it.

Did you check the tread for a nail or a stone?
Are the tyres old? If a tread is starting to lift it will make a noise when you go faster. Check for cracks and splits and bumps.

Yeh looked for a stone or nail but none there, the tyres are about 4 years old and it does look a bit funny in one spot, like it has been really hot.
