Post subject:  Re-wiring questions

I'm installing a new wiring harnes. The PO had made a lovelly job of butchering the original and then bound it all in insulating tape. Some questions:
1- are the wires normally soldered to the sealed beam headlights (as present)or should there be push on terminals? - new wires are blank at this end - no terminals connected or supplied.

2- There are two small holes - one each side- low down on the inside of the engine bay going through into the wheel arch. On one side the PO has the wires going through this to the lights - on the other he has the wires following in the crease in the body panel above the grill and passing into the wheel arch where the side wall meets the front (behind the headlight) - Which is correct? Obviously the holes would need grommets.

Any comments?

1. Wires were soldered to a 3 pin moulded plug. Just like early Holden etc.

2. On both my 850 & `matic there's no grommets- wires go thru from cavity at ends of slam panel.

I did a search to find this post about rewiring.
The auto sparky just came and had a look at my 78 clubman van.
He reckoned $400-$500 to pull out and tidy up any problems in the harness, pull the fusebox out and sandblast it, and connect up all the wires that dont have a home at the moment :

I then rang Vic Longden (the guy in WA who makes up replacement wiring harnesses) and he tells me yes, he can make up a loom for the 76-78 clubman van, he just needs some plug off the steering column, that he fits to the new harness. All good, cost $350 but he can't supply for 4 months coz he's absolutely snowed under

My question, what would you expect to pay for someone to fit the harness to a 78 clubman van. It sounded like the auto sparky was going to charge me the same with or without the new harness. Id rather go with new harness obviously, but the $350 plus another $400-$500 is a little over the top, when in actual fact, it seems that the wiring isnt that bad, I just dont know what goes where... and the fusebox is rusted, but I could fix that myself (or buy another one surely)...

what do you guys reckon.

I think I need another auto sparky to look at it :?

You can get the plugs for the headlight from a Auto Spark and Super Cheap has them too.

most looms that you buy will come with a numbered code telling you where to connect what. Try www.vinwire.com.au they did one for doogie at $350 and it was perfect, and that included all the connectors!

Cheers

on my way!
I cant wait 4 months, decided this morning I'll have to tackle it myself. I refuse to be ripped off by an auto sparky... just yet.

Operation Electrics..

Lay out the loom on the floor and work out where everything goes. Then use you wiring diagram in your workshop manual to trace what each wire connects to. It's all pretty logical, just take your time. :)

Now is a good time to add extra wiring for any accessories you plan to add. eg: an electic fuel pump, fog lamps, driving lights etc and run relays for the headlights (so the crappy headlight switch lasts).

There is a place called Autosparks in the UK that stocks it in all the right colour codes. Dunno about in Oz.

I've always gone to the wreckers and selected the best loom from a similar model/year and kept any looms from cars I have scrapped. That way I always have spare wires of the correct code. My Moke has a 76 Clubman dash cluster and loom, because I had it lying around. I add accessory wires in non-standard colours eg: blue with yellow tape wrapped every three inches is my fog lights. I also add a better fuse box with more fuses!

General purpose thinners does a great job of cleaning up old wiring. Or you can put the loom in a pillowcase and run it through the washing machine. Just make sure you dry it out well.

Really? Excellent.

While we're on the subject of rewiring, is taking out the dash cluster difficult ?(78 Clubman van) so I can get to the harness.

I dont have my Mini manual, is there a service manual available online for the Clubmans? ie How to remove your dash cluster.

R yes the wireing Loom..It is straigh forward..not many wires at all.
I took out Marcia's and labeled every wire. Yep and I have also gone down to local wreckers (pickand Payless) and riped out and other. Lucky for me I passed through for Zip dollars..Always payes to be nice.
I'm adding the additional to my existing Loom and hiding the lot.
Jill thier realy is not much to it if you have it labeled or have a Haynes Book of Lies..or the Ozzy version

Great :)
Ive Emailed the vinwire people and asked for a price and availabilty as they didnt have the 78 clubman listed in their parts list.

Looks like prolly $370ish + GST . Will label everything before I disconnect it. I might pull the dash out first and see how bad it is behind the dash. Its gonna have to come out anyway.

Only problem I see is the half a dozen wires down the front of the car that arent connected to anything at the moment. I'll just have to sit down with a cuppa and work it out I guess ;)

Have never liked playing with the wiring on cars, didnt mind pulling the head off, setting the timing or adjusting tapets, all those things are covered in the manuals... but wiring.. all you get are confusing diagrams with lines going everywhere :? Looks like a fusebox and dash weekend coming up :)
