Post subject:  How Many Gears in a 77 Clubman Estate?

gday all,
my matic has the following gear options:
R (reverse)
N (Neutral)
1 (1st gear)
2 (2nd)
3 (3rd)
4 (4th)
D (all 4 gears: 1st gear from 0-12mph, 2nd from 12-18mph, 3rd from 18-22mph, 4th from 22mph onwards)

how many gears does this clubman have?

three pics at the bottom
it also looks like you have to pull the black sheath up to engage reverse too, unlike matics where you yank on the whole shaft

I think it's still 4. It just doesn't hold 4th like yours does if you put in `4'.

As far as I know all the AP boxes were 4 speeds.

Real late ones are different in that there is a Park position.

I have read on the ADO16 (morris 1100) mailing list that there were 3 speed autos fitted to 1100s in the early 70s in the UK, so they may have fitted them to minis as well.

I have never seen one but I was told that they exist.

NO! All AP Auto boxes fitted to Minis/1100/1300 were 4 speed.

As Dr Mini said the number of shifter positions changed over the years.

Early were (from top) RN1234D

Changed to RN123D in early 70's - (77 UK built Clubman would have this one).

Later changed to PRN123D (late 80's ??) - which is what my Moke A+ 1275 has. 8)

The internals of the different boxes are different, but all have four speeds.
