Post subject:  Too much oil

I topped my oil up at the weekend and looks like I have put too much in, it is quite a way over the maximum on the dipstick. Looking at the block I think I can see oil coming out of the Oil Pressure Relief Valve, which I guess is part of it's purpose.

Like all Mini's it drops oil anyway, should I just leave it until it drops enough to get back to normal levels or should I drain some off?

Cheers

Rick

No, that's not how it works!
Too much oil will lead to blown seals. Drop some of that oil out the sump plug ASAP!

Drain some out before you stuff things up big time - very expensive to fix when the job will only take you 5 minutes.

Hmm...how much oil is too much ?

My oil pressure used to drop to about 10 going around sharp corners, so i was told to fill it up about 1cm past the full line on the dipstick.

Should I not do this in future ?

Max, i used to do the same before i got a centre oil pickup whenever i went on spirited drives..Never had a problem.

We really need to determine how much higher it is than max on the dipstick a cm or two shouldn't cause any problems

IMO you can't go past Castrol Formula R 20w50 NON SYNTHETIC..

It's the same as the new Castrol EDGE Sport 25w50

Good stuff indeed...

Yup, I use castrol Formula R, never had an issue with it. Kazjim put me on to it.

Also, are the centre pickups hard to fit ?

Not really, they just replace the old strainer with a sock like filter and extended tube, much easier to fit with the engine out and apart ;) No cheap for what they are, but i'd do it while it's apart.
