I noticed yesterday that in my mums deluxe (clubman dash cluster) that the fuel guage drops a fair way when i turn the ignition off (like all cars) but i was wondering if the tank is empty when it says that it is empty or when it get to the bottom of the gauge (like when there is no power to it)

Hopefully im not just rambling a whole bunch of crappola.

i know its a silly question and the mini fuel guages arent very accurate but i was just hoping that somebody could help me out with this!!!

on my mini 25 1984, no idea wat ur guages are like

u fill the tank to the brim and its way of the scale at the top

but wen its at the start of the red line on the scale its bone dry, and wen u turn of the ignition it drops way of the scale at the bottom

Basically they are all prone to vary a bit , I've had mini's where empty was a hair above the E mark and some that were 1/4" below the line . All you can do is carry a 4 litre mower tin of fuel in the boot and on a quiet road (not reccomended for city traffic) drive till you run out . Just be careful if you have a mechanical fuel pump though , you'll probably flatten the battery before you draw the fuel up so squirt a little into the carb to start it .

An easy way would be find out how big your fuel tank is and as you go to fill up take note of where the fuel guage is sitting. if it's a 20ltr tank and you put in 18 ltrs then at the the point the guage was at you had 2ltrs left. So each time you fill up you get an idea of how much fuel is left in your tank fuel tanks are rarely rectangular so they don't go down in a predictable way. for example my camry does 200km before it moves off empty another 200 km to half way and another 200 km to empty. The first 200kms could be very decieving if you didn't know what it was up to

With my LS when the guage hits the red it takes around 18/20litres to fill up.. The most I have ever put in was 23litres in one fill...

The other day... I knew my tank was a bit empty... well I was driving to the servo and got into the turning lane (had to turn over 2 lanes) and it died. Had to push it into the servo, hehe.

I've never put more than 30litres in the tank, but on this occasion, I DID! (note it's the 1275 LS fuel tank, which is bigger like in the Rovers).

My previous mini's fuel gage didnt work! Well, untill one day when i ran out of feul, pushed it to the servo, filled it up........ and PRESTO, the fuel gage starts working

Used two of the most hi tec ways known to mini kind:
used to either tap the tank to get a rough idea of how much was left or get a bit of hose, stick it in pull it out as see how wet it got..

I use the hi-tech stick guage on my van.

But... hopefully standard low tech guage will work now. I've had to replace the fuel tank, and while the sender was out, I fixed it! It needed a bit of wire soldered from the terminal thing to the coil thing. It works now, well atleast it did before I put it in the tank, so who knows if it will still work when there is acutally petrol in it!

I wish my van's gauge would work. It have replaced the gauge, the sender, the float, voltage reg and tried bypassing the wire from sender to gauge. Nothing worked!

My low tech approach is a little counter on the dash. I dial up the mileage when I fill the tank. When I reach 150miles from that counter's figure, I know I'm running on fumes and it's time to fill up.
