| Post subject: | Neutral Idle Whining |
Whilst my mini is at idle and neutral, there is a soft, but easily noticeable whining sound coming from the gear lever/clutch, somewhere, i dunno. The noise goes away when the clutch is fully depressed. Is the noise and similar things normal, considering i have a brand new clutch and a 'reco' gearbox? |

Did you replace the Clutch spigot bearing(Throwout Bearing)? You may have a noisy bearing? |

I second that , sounds like the throw out bearing (countless names , but the bearing that pushes the clutch diaphram to release the clutch) is running on the diaphram all the time and will burn out in time . See if you can pull the clutch lever towards the passenger side of the car , you should be able to pull it so there is 1/8th of an inch or a bit less clearance from the 7/16 bolt that the arm rests on above the pivot . This tiny gap is essential so the bearing doesn't run constantly . Either that or they reused an old bearing or were unlucky enough to get a dud bearing . |

Guys it's whining BEFORE he pushes the clutch in, the noise then goes away so it's not the thrust bearing. My bet is maybe a worn mainshaft nose- but good Mini boxes don't whine in neutral. As long as it's just a faint whine it's probably no big deal, these boxes are 30+ years old now. Grindy noises are something else..... |

I've seen one that was just touching the diaphram and was whining when spinning at idle but when there was pressure on it from the clutch pedal being pushed it was quiet , just check to see the adjustment is right first , 2 minute check and then it can be ruled out . |
