pull it out and grease the bits on the end of the shaft (hold the section with the gear on it and twist it down towards the starter , grease the large thread and put it back in) , might be getting a bit dry , if it still doesn't work then look at either having the bit you greased reconditioned if it's a car you want to keep standard , or as poeee said get a gemini starter for convenience ..... |

I have nevered greased mine as you grese it will go hard then the same thing will happen. I usually dismantle it and cleaned and then reassemble it using graphite powder and it would work for years after that. |

Next time you're home, switch it over to the spare one in the garage. The one you're having hassles with can then be 'taught a lesson' ![]() hooroo |

I thought the trick was not to ever grease it (thats what Leyland recomended btw "under no circumtances should any lubricant be applied to the armature gear") coz it collects crud and jams and transfers all the crud to the flywheel as well. The best thinkg is to have it perfectly clean. Make sure the armature travels freely on its shaft and returns all the way to the end when pulled backward. The large heavy duty spring on the end of the shaft might have cracked or the internal spring inside the armature could be bust (I've seen both happen in my car). |

Don't use any grease or oil . Give it a good clean and wash with kerosene. This will leave a film that will lubricate without picking up dirt. |
