Post subject:  Handbrake troubleshooter
Hey boys,

So my handbrake... here is it's condition

1) Handle adjustment (inside the car) is at full, cannot adjust it anymore but it will only engage right at the very top.
2) Both right and left quadrants move freely (they do now :lol: )
3) the brake adjust screws are set at highest level of adjustment (to push the brake shoes as close to the drums as possible. There is still heaps of space between shoe and drum
4) when I brake hard, it pulls up straight as a train so not sure if both rears are contacting at the same time or not... hard to tell
5) when I pull the hand brake, I only get the rear left side engaging
6) when i pull on the cable (not the handbrake but the cable on the rear suspension arm), the rear left side engages, when i try it on the right rear, it does not, although the mechanism inside the drum does move freely.

So do I need new brake pads on the right hand side rear? could it be wrong radius brake shoes?

Also I noticed that the hand brake actuator thingy inside the drum of the right rear wheel pushes the front shoe forward but does not push the back shoe backwards. Is it supposed to?

Chong,
Sound like you need new rear brake linings. After checking your car, I think the cables are stretched, too.
I'd fix those 2 things first and proceed from there. :wink:

Yeah well you said to pull the cable and check if it makes contact and it doesn't. So fixing the cable won't do any good right? need to change the lot, cable, brake shoes etc. :(

The handbrake lever part in the rear drum is two peices on metal that pivet on a rivet. When my hand brake was not working on one side, it turned out to be play in this rivet (worn out).....I just replaced it and it fixed the problem :wink:

But I would say that Dr mini is right about needing new cables and shoes....they tend to become stretched over time...when you love doing handbrake turns :P

The linkage in the drum works like this- as the cable pulls forward, it pushes the front shoe in contact, then this makes the rear link pivot and push the rear shoe back. If it's not coming back it because either the cable is stretched, or the shoes are very worn, or the pivot pin inside the drum is rusted or stuck.

If you are looking at it with the drum off, it won't push back because the front shoe has nothing to react against.... :cry:

I see so you cannot check the rear shoe movement with the drums off. Well we all know what I will be looking for at the swap meet on Sunday :wink:
