seeing as my olds have little or no confidence in me what so ever my dad has layed down a challenge, once i've payed my bike off (got a bank loan for another moto  ) i can get my hands on my first mini BUT apart from the cost of the car i'm only allowed to spend 5 grand on it from start to finish other wise it's gotta be sold or if i pull it off i can keep it and do what i want with my current car...........think it can be done?

lol i wish my dad hated me that much, na i gotta buy the car myself and every thing spent on it keeping a tally of every thing, once the tally hits 5g's and the cars not done bye bye car unless i can come under the 5g's or on it |

You can do it for 5K just keep a good eye out for a good body and see what you can skame for the rest and do almost all work yourself that what I'm doing 
Have a go at it. by the sounds of it you are able to keep the mini at home. Get the Mini up and running on the road and Say thier U go dad its under budget. Done |

maaaate, I paid $500 for my Clubby and my budget was roughly $5k......I am still well under that so IT CAN BE DONE! You just have to do a lot yourself, or pay guys with cans of JD & Coke for help..... |

As a guide I bought the car for $1500 have spent $2000 so far and have about $1000 to go - but then I'm being picky - probably could have got it on the road for $1000

i reckon under $5000 should be easy! it depends on how good you want it to look and go. Imean look at JAM...its looking sweet as! and as anton said...he's still well under his budget if you;re after a show stopping 1380...then you have no chance....otherwise go for it

If you get something close to RWC, then $5k is heaps. I bought my 1st Mini for $600 (10 or so years ago admittedly), spent about $800 getting the RWC, and it was great.
My latest, well, I've just hit $25k.....

Heaps easy! I got my car for $2500 and was road registered and running, changed lots of things, spent well over $1500 already, excluding new rego and comprehensive insurance, but that also includes non essential mods like a Dellorto 45
It can be done. When you go to buy, shop around A LOT and make sure you buy from the most honest seller (ie. one that will tell you eactly what is wrong with the car and what needs fixing etc). Helps to start with a solid car to start with. Make it easier for yourself and buy a clubman as it will be cheaper than round noses (not meaning to degrade the clubmans as I like clubmans too )
My seller told me up front, "needs both CV's fixed, some electrical work, the correct carby and a new alternator and it'll be fine" and he was right 
Just be ready to do lots of the handyman work yourself to save $$$ and do your research beforehand! Hope you have tools already

PS. If your car is going to be a daily driver, then you should negotiate running costs and maintenance costs to be removed or partially removed from the budget of $5000 as that will cost you $$$ every month/year. I just want you to get the best deal from your parents

thanx guys i'm lookin at spending up to $1000 on a clubman (just prefer them to the round noses) and the goal i got it set at is 1. respray and airbrushing (can do that my self) 2.convert the front brakes to discs 3.compleat new upholstery (can get it done cheap) 4.engine mods (just depending on what comes in the car) 5.get it on the road 6. new shell, putting this one in just in case the shell is to far gone to repair if i can get all those done and under buget i'm sweet |

Brand spanking new shells would be over $5,000 before they were delivered from the UK! If you buy a good body in the first place you won't need a new shell!! Even better, buy one in a colour you like, so you can get away with an "outside only" respray and not have to worry about painting the engine bay and door jambs. With careful spending you should be fine. My van owes me around $6,000 but I did not keep careful records for it so I can't be sure exactly. I've kept a spreadsheet for the Moke project detailing every cent I have spent on it. So far it owes me $2400 and will owe me approx $4,300 on the road. That includes a 1275 Auto, City Disks, paint and trim!

Skip this part, you'll blow your budget just on this alone depending on what you want, as you may also need new wheels. The drums, if in good condition with new brake shoes and serviced brake cylinders etc will be more than adequate to stop your car. If you buy a clubman with a 1275 already in it, it will most likely come with discs but I don't fancy your chances at picking one of those up for $1000. If all you are looking to do is get it running then most of the things you list are non essential... ie. respray and engine mods etc. I bet you'll spend a good $1000 just replacing old bits in the engine and car and to get it running decently, let alone have money for mods! bling bling costs ching ching
Find a good clean car with surface rust at most and you likely won't need a respray unless you are looking for a bling bling head turner car, in that case $5000 aint enough
Most importantly: shop around! go see as many clubmans as you can! talk to as many clubman owners as possible... good way to find out what to look for... |

I agree with 68Delux - don't do the disc conversion, yet. Wait until you have restored the car, kept it under $5 large and made your father happy. Then do a disc brake conversion. After all, unless you are running a 1275 disc brakes are not essential (but really, really desirable!) to completing the car. Anto |
