Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows how to pull a Smiths Tacho apart and clean the inside of the glass? As there seems to be some flaky paint inside of the one I have.. Or is it better to send it to someone to clean for me? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.. |

Not sure myself Smith normal have tab's on the rim to hold it but I just checked mine also and I have same problem as you so I'm at a lose at the moment. Have you worked out the wiring on the back. I'm guessing you have three connections on the back also |

Yeah I have the same problem, there is a rim around the glass part of the guage that seems to be holding the back "cup" onto the front glass. I have no idea how you would loosen this metal rim to get at the insides... If you find out, let me know! |

Olympic Instruments (in Pymble) would do it but it will cost $$$. Is it staked on like the speedo, or what? Can't remember (last had one in `69...!)

Gaf, you were there dude! same guy I "stole" the oil cooler from. $15, 8000rpm smiths tacho, unknown condition. It works via the 6 cyl plug but not the 4 cyl plug. I am sure it's a easy to fix thing once I figure out how to open the blardy thing! if not, off to a repairer or ... ebay

Dam that right. 
There are three plugs on the back but I'm at a loss which is which. I thought I had it but will have to check it against my Special Multi Meter see if its correct (for got about That0 and see how it goes |

Yeah there is a 12V and a 6V plug plus a (+) or ground terminal between them. The 12V looks like it is for V6? I have no idea... Anyway I pulled her apart and you have to break the front chrome bevel thingy (mine is just black not chrome) to remove the glass and pop out the intruments. I am going to test it today on my car again... I have a feeling I know what the little additional looped plug on the back is... Stay tuned

OK Chaps, Calibration of the tacho is $22 from Olympic Instruments (Pymble). They will also look at what it's doing and why it aint going. It seems that the 6V 12V has nothing to do with it 
Well sounds like this chap is fair dinkum. Might need to give them a visit, worste of all, they aren't open saturdays  . Lets see... $15 + $22 = $37... still good price for a tacho...
