When starting of the morning and driving down the road the gearbox grates in to each gear but when warm no problems :(

Am I using the wrong oil? I using Catrol Edge 25/50. I have a modified engine, re13 cam, oversize ports, shaved head etc...

Is this normal?

Gearbox in the last mini hated the cold.

Barely went into 1st, and popped out of 1st in really cold weather. Usually on my way to work.....but did it all the way to work...luckily its only a 7 minute drive. :)

I use the same oil in my MK1 Cooper S and have no problem selecting gears when its cold, just more mini owning joys i guess.

Don't just assume that your gearbox is kapoot! You live in Tassie....farkn cold there in the middle of Summer!

The weather can effect gear selection as much as oil choice or gearbox wear.

You could do an oil change to a thinner grade oil and see if there is any improvement? I think in pommy land some of the guys use a thinner viscosity oil through winter and a thicker grade in summer!

Don't forget to change the filter too!

Cheers
Matt

The gearbox in my LS was rebuilt not long ago, has the right oil in it but can still crunch going into 2nd or 3rd when cold but once warm, no probs...

I flip back and forth between Penrite HPR30 and HPR 40 from summer to winter. It helps a little with the gear change problems, and I don't worry about oil compatabilities.

Every little bit I guess...

You should be warming the mini up regardless in such a cold environment. Warming it up before driving from cold is supposed to be essential for the longevity of the engine.

If i start it and drive straight off (which i rarely do anyway, just say if i need to move it around the back of the house) the first to second change is very notchy and you can feel the baulk ring grab. This is on colder nights, never happens when warm though..

I have no gearbox probs when cold or hot, with Castrol 25W/50, but I have seen this prob in other cars.
BTW, my baulk rings are now 10 years old... 8)
In Tassie, I'd run something a bit thinner in winter...
