Firstly i have a 1973 mini clubman. Anyway my speedo waves up and down when i drive along which is annoying the hell outa me coz its obviously hard to estimate what speed im actually doing. the old 1 snaped whilst driving along the freeway about 2 weeks ago, iv since bought a new 1 and it workd fine for about 1km tops! and then started to wave around again.. iv checked the lil cogs in the gear box they r fine, iv check where the speedo cable joins the back of the dash and cant see any wear and tear there either.. does anyone have any answers to my problem?

Did you change the whole speedo cable or just the inner?
Waving speedo usually means either the cable has a kink in it or it is dry and sticking.
Be aware that many new cables have no lube in them, I have even bought new ones that had rust all over the inner.

I'd take the inner out, & grease it- but leave it dry for the last 100mm or so at the top. You do not want grease getting into the speedo head....

good advice there. I have been living with the same problem for months now.

i changed the entire speedo cable can't remember if it had lube or not.. dont tink so to be honest.. well yesturday i took the dash out and unscrewed it from behind the dash pulled the inner (cable) out about an inch and drizzeled 3in1 oil down into the outer thinking that might help lube it up thinking that it might be as u say sticking, but no luck unfortunately its still waving do u think this is because i need proper greese or it still cood b something else?

Check there are no kinks or sharp bends in the cable. Top, or bottom...

I've succesfuly dessasembled my speedo on the weekend - took it all apart, striped the surface rust (the housing back to bare metal) and repainted the insides very light blue (to reflect the bulb light onto the dial) and the rest matt black. Looks great now. amazed me how easy it would be to wind the trip count to 0 again.

Did that on my clubbie gauge last night, not very hard at all

hi i had this happen to me not long back and it turned out to be a stuck odometer cog
so with a quick strip down and reasemble with bits from a doner speedo fixed it

This should be done in a clean place far away from iron filings etc....the speedo should then be plastic bagged if its not going to be used for a while. Iron filings on the rotating magnet fouling the drag cup can also cause waivering needles

I have a speedo I need to play with also. I have been reluctant because I have ham fists with delicate things. How hard is it to get the speedo needle off the spindle and then back on again without damaging either. ????

Not hard, it just pulls off but there's NOTHING to align it back in the same place.
One method is flick the zero stop wire out of the way, and see where the needle points at rest. Then mark that spot on the dial with a lead pencil or whatever. You can then pull the needle off. Refit it afterwards, hold spindle drum still and turn the needle until it points at this same spot.

Yep....the spindle usually has a fine set of splines on the pointer end...make sure the speedo is flat (face up) when you mark where the pointer is at rest.

When you pull the pointer off, try and grip the spindle with some suitable small pliers so that you are not pulling against the speedos movement...same same when you are pushing the pointer back on (don't twist the pointer over the splines )

Did that on a cruise today, except it did it just as i got to a pull in bay, so i had to take photos. My car has now done a total of 100000kms.
