when im in 4th gear,in certain situations,my clubby slips out of 4th,this is very annoying.often it will be when i start up a hill or the revs die down a bit.iv suspected for a while that im changeing into 4th to early and should stay in third.the problem i have with staying in third is the mini sounds like its reving to high even at 3 1/2 000 rpm,my tacho red lines at 5 1/2 , whats the go,can you rev minis hard whats to hard and when should i change into 3rd this is my first car and i dont have a lot to compare it to thanks

Minis jump out of gear for a couple of reasons - it may be that you have a worn engine mount and the engine is moving. You would hear an audible thump if this was the case though as the engine moves and pulls itself out of fourth gear.

The most common reason they jump out of gear is because the gearbox is worn and is near needing a rebuild. Dont rush into that though because you wont get much change from $1,000 - $2,000 and then you should get a mini specialist to do it for you.

As far as how far to rev your mini - well - what sort is it - if its an 1100 then 5,500 is about the maximum without some modifications to the carby, exhaust and engine. A 998 mmay rev a bit higher but its not necessary for normal driving - you want to change from third to fourth at about 4,500 when you are going up a hill and don't let the revs fall too much in fourth gear and cause the poor mini to slog its way up the hill. Smoooth flowing revs and driving is always best.

yeah it may sound like its revving hard, thats because of the lack of sound deadening compared to a modern car, and its a 4 cyl and they always sound like theyre working harder.
normal driving, change at 3000 rpm, when your going up a hill, you want revs, you dont want the engine to struggle.
don't expect more than 5000rpm from a standard motor unless its in a good state of tune

if its popping out of gear it could also be the selector fork, needing the gearbox to come apart.
