Can anyone tell me if I can fit a 12G940 will fit onto a 1098 engine?

I've heard it can be done what needs to be done to make it fit? Do I need to get my block pocketed?

Yes you need to get the pockets for the block....HOWEVER,

I ran one on a 998cc and had it on there for 12 months without the pocketing. However you cannot rev it hard and definitely STD cam and rocker gear. Saying that though - it went like a cut snake until I decided to go back to a 12G202 instead.

Dave Hamills book "How to Powertune BMC/Leyland 998cc" is a good reference.

If you run stock rockers and a cam with less than .290" lobe lift, you can get away without pocketing a 12G940 (or a 12G1316) on a road motor. As long as head is hardly decked and ex valves are sunk in a bit (as most are these days).
There's an article by Keith Calver in Feb 06 issue of MINI Magazine.

I did one (on 1100 bored to 1220cc) back in 1968, with a 544 cam and pocketed block, yes it did go rather well... 8)

It's just got one of them kent 266 cams in it. I'm running std rockers. The head has been decked .10thou. Do you think this would work without pocketing? Where can I get a block pocketed if need be?

Yes it should be OK without pocketing.

Graham Russell could do it, if motor is not in car.
I did mine IN the car way back then, kazjim on here did his recently the same way, using a die grinder and stones.
Buy Des Hammill's book and go for it if you want, it has step by step instructions- but if it's not going to be over-revved, you should get by without it.

What would you consider over revving? Like above 5000?

Thanks everyone for the help.

I never knew you could do it yourself with a grinder. Learn something everyday.

One last question. Would I use a 1275 head gasket, since I'm using the 1275 head. Or do I stick with the 1098 head gasket?

The 1275 BK450 gasket is the best one these days, but KC says watch the front water holes near #4 cylinder.. you may need a 12mm plug screwed into one of them. Details in Feb 06 issue of Mini Mag.

Rule of thumb is you always use the gasket that belongs to the head type. A smallbore gasket will not seal all the water holes in the head.
