Wow... for years i was under the impression that all rubber cones were the same..... same size, same rate of compression, all interchangable with each other... but reading through a few of the topics here, it seems there are some differences between cones.

What are the actual differences, and are there any codes stamped into the cones for reference to their original application??

I get the feeling my minis might have a mixture of cones....

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe ALL the Oz Minis had the same cones, and had the 1/2" UNF thread. According to my old boss- he worked at Dunlop Australia then, who made them.

OTOH- yes there were various different hydrolastic displacers.....

If buying from a wrecker etc, rear cones do settle less than fronts, so grab them first!

If buying new ones from UK or USA, yes there are different ones about now- `smootha-ride', standard, or competion.

my fronts look different to the rears, but I think that is due to wear and age.

Both are Dunlop brand.

To be honest, if I replace my fronts, it will sit higher!!! Which is not a good look, so I might just keep my original fronts....

Later rear cones did not have the threaded nut in the centre - just solid rubber. I got some good condition rears that didn't have the hole - so I had to swap my rears to the front (that needed replacing) and put the new secondhand ones in the rear

My Sept `78 Clubbie has the rears threaded- it's one of the last made- somebody must have swapped yours for new sometime..

????????????????? If I hadn't had them in my hot little hands and cleaned and painted the metal bits with Kilrust epoxy paint I would have thought I was mistaken - They must have been an early after market manufacture. I bought them off Glen Carpenter here in Brizzy and he said they were made for the rear suspension and were common in the later models. - don't know how much cheaper they would be leaving the nut out.
Anyway it gave me and excuse to overhaul the rear suspension as well as doing the front

I was told by someone that the `nut free' ones came after the UK changed to Metric. Not sure one way or the other- but all the original Oz made ones I've seen had the 1/2" UNF thread inside...

...so basically there should be no difference in cones other than the amount they have already been worn??? PHEW!!!!!
