Im finnally completing the final stages of pot joint replacement, when adding the diff housing back on, should i use gasket goo??

(I dont have any currently, just checking before i make a crucial mistake and go without).

Also, the bearings on either side of the final drive had a couple of thin shims, are these necessary and how do i know how many i need? Sorry i cant find my damn manuals.

Cheers: )

Yes you DO need the shims. Otherwise the diff will float about in the bearings.
Beware- current side cover gaskets are thicker, this means you will need MORE shims.
I suggest you borrow a manual... I've had too many beers tonite to write out precise steps...

Preload on the bearings is .002" for early type, and .005" for the later type (which have `thrust' stamped on one side).
