On the way home from work tonight
all of a sudden i couldnt select 3rd
there was no bang, clunk or thud :?
it was almost like there was something blocking the gate
then when i got home and shut it down i tried to go throught the gears without the motor running and was able to select all 4 :?
started her up again as was able to select third again :o
although first and third seemed a little bit sloppeier that it was this morning :(

any ideas on possible causes and best way to remedy im prety sure its the selectors and not the actual gearbox :)

i think its a remote change( long box like structure under floor from motor to gear stick)

Cheers

Gadget.

Check the linkages on top of the diff housing- look down on them whilst someone wiggles the gearstick.
Maybe one of the knuckle clamp bolts is loose, or the bronze bushes for the selector shaft in the diff housing are stuffed. See if top of that shaft wiggles about.
There is not much to go wrong selectorwise in the remote gearbox itself, unless you have maybe broken a selector fork. But then the problem will stay.

the knuckles look ok moving and stuff when gear lever moved with motor off

got all 4 gears motor off :?

turn motor on trandom gears WTF :? :?

I can only think that the selector fork is SNAFU
and the broken bit is vibrating into the wrong place with the motor running
so will put it up on the ramps and remove the bottom plate and have a look after work tomorrow hopefully an easy fix.

Sime...did you try and check the tighteness of the knuckles :?: They could be just loose enough to work most times and then bind up on other occaisions....get some light down there and see if you can see any up and down movement on the splines....try and check tightness of pinch bolts whilst there.

Is the remote extension all bolted up nice and tight :?:

A few years ago I was driving to a moke workshop as part of the club, pulled up to some lights and all of a sudden couldn't get it into first or second, third and fourth worked ok. Had to rekit the master cylinder at the workshop (lucky us).

A year or so later I was driving and third and fourth suddenly became unselectable, and first and second felt stiffer. This time it was the slave cylinder that needed kitting.

Might be worth kitting both just to be safe before doing anything major.
