Post subject:  Oil Cooler Hose Question.

Today i was cranking over the motor, and it kinda struggled to keep revs after a minute of runnin on the ground. Anyways the motor has great oil pressure, but when i cranked it over one time, the hose that i have between the oil filter flange, and the other oil flange in the block, spilit, and the motor kicked up and sounded like it should be. My mind is really baffled as to how this can be, as a result i lost alot of oil. Seems to me that the hose was blocked or something but it wasnt. And i didnt handle the hose for it to split either. it looked like it split under , 'oil pressure' or pressure of somesort.

Is there any reason as to how and why this happened?
Should i use a specific hose?

It had good clamps on it as well. I do know that most people have the straight copper hose going from one end to the other, mines just flanges cause they connect to my oil cooler. I have the old style cooper S oil cooler.

Then i started looking at ebays oil cooler hose kit that mini sport sell, and the fittings they have, made me wonder whether they would actually work on my fitings, just like the ever other mini has.

Heres a pic of my rebuilt motor, as you can see the black hose that goes between the 2 flanges for the oil; is what im talking about. Normally one end would connect to my oil cooler etc, its not connected in the pic as you can see.

I reckon it was just an old hose by the sounds of it. Just replace both hoses with a new kit. Braided if you must

The orginal is a copper pipe so maybe you need a braided hose as 68Delux said???

So what about his real question, why did the motor pick up and run properly once the hose had ruptured?

I recon because u filled the fuel bowler with 2 much fuel + it was flooding, and it was just a fluke that it went down to a reasonable level as the line blew.

Told ya 2 wait till i came around.

Maybe you should try to force oil through paper and see how hard it can be.
There must be some sort of pressure drop accross the filter? Is there a releif valve? If there isn't then the oil has no choice but to pass through the filter.

I couldn't see myself using a rubber hose to transport large volumes of vcery hot oil, it's a bit dodge, especially when the proper reinforced hoses are so easily available.

I use Pirtek's 400psi hydraulic return hose. This uses 1/2" BSP push-on barb fittings, same size as Cooper S.
I had 2 hoses on, but now the oil cooler is gone I run with one.
It is textile braided not steel, so it bends easier than the 1000psi high pressure stuff.

I wouldn't run with standard hose and clamps, as once the hose settles in a bit it can pull thru the clamps. And lots of cheapo hose is not rated for oil.
