Post subject:  what to pay for a 66 Morris MM

hey all,

I might have the opportunity to buy a 1966 Morris Mini Minor.
the car is very original, cept had a respray over 10 years ago (engine bay has overspray).

car is nice , clean, no rust or dents. Just needs touching up, new carpets, seat covers etc. Apart from that, all there, nice chrome etc.

Driven few times a a week, very low mileage, regularly serviced, always under cover, etc. Bog standard, would look perfect with a full repray tho .Has a 1275 motor (has big silver morris plate oin chrome cover, with another plateon top with details??)

Lady wants $3000, any opinions on the price are warmly regarded. not a show room condition car, but a lovely start I feel.

Any thoughts appreciated...

Regards,
Ryan

Just something to check , does it have disc brakes as well as the 1275 motor ? If not then you are open to a lot of rego problems as well as the chance of running out of brakes due to getting the drums too hot if you overwork them .

Also how an it be an origional morris mini minor when you state it has a 1275 in it?
Morris mini minor was an 850, 1966 is more likly an 850-998.

Cheers Guys,

Sorry, i should have stipulated, veryy original, CEPT.... has been upgraded to a 1275. Yeah, was originally a 850.
i have same model, cept mine is a DeLuxe (think is a 998?).

Don't think has disk brakes (in fact sure it doesn't), but have a mate who may be able to get me some. it hasn't gone above 60kmph for 10 years, so wasn't an issue for the owner =)

Well , no disc brakes with a 1275 means an unroadworthy car , point that out to the seller and get the price lowered to suit as you'll need to upgrade the brakes . Since it hasn't done much for so long you'll need to refurbish the brakes most likely anyway , but find out the cost of the brakes your mate can get , and their condition (need a rebuild ?) and decide on it's value then .

Cheers Sports, thats the kind of thing I need to think about =)

Not too stressed about it all (if i get to buy it), specially since the motor will eventually end up in my other 66.
Can always sell this off one day to recoup a bit of my money, with a rebuilt 998 instead.

yeah, will offer a bit less i think.. Still, i have seen some shockers going for around $3000 lately. Theres actually a beautiful greay rioundie on ebay at the moment (up around $3500, spewing i am in perth ......

here in the west the laws are a bit different to some of the other states. before i bought the S i started a resto on a 65 deluxe. i called the licensing mob and asked whether disc brakes were a legal requirement since i was planning on putting a 1275cc in and they said that it doesn't matter what type of brakes it has so long as they work efficiently. obviously most people would recommend discs anyway for safety reasons but i've heard plenty of people say that drums can work very well if maintained correctly. my younger bro had drums on his 1310 clubby in SA about 13 years ago and they worked fine (though i think SA laws would have meant his wasn't legal...)

Well,

I am getting the Car, I will finally have a driveable mini again, after all these years....

is actually a 68 I found out. the 1275 is in perfect condition, just needs extractors and a weber to open her up. I ended up getting it for $2500, so I am quite pleased.

Car was repainted 18 years ago, no crashes, but engine bay needs cleaining up, as does boot. Gonna rip out the "Nann-ish" carpets, front Window sun visor, and rims, put new black carpet (from my spare 66), tin windows, and put mags on her.

Thinking this baby will be a nive driver till I get my 66 de luxe up and running, then this baby will go into storage awaiting respray.

Thanks for your tips, I will be checking the motor number tomorrow, i don't expect it to be anything but from a morris, but you never know...... :P

Good luck champ. At $3000 the car was a bargain, so at $2500 you have done extremely well.
