my car is only putting out 10 volts at idle and is giving me a flat battery. i have completely rebuilt and reset my voltage regulator and i am sure that its all good in that department. i would like to know if there is a way of getting the corret amount of voltage from the dynano it very low revs? can any body tell me how i can get my battery to charge without changing to an alternator? any help would be real good. |

I could well be wrong but I thought that was normal with generator's , they need more revs to reach 12 volts ? I was told that a car with an alternater will slowly charge at idle but a generator won't , I'm interested to hear if that's right or not ???? |

![]() The generator doesn't charge the battery at idle like an alternator. If the battery isn't being charged then the cut out part of the regulator may not be working. Adjusting the voltage regulator isn't quite straight forward. You have to make the adjustments quickly, within say 30 secs, or you won't get the setting right due to heating of the coils etc. You have to check/set the mechanical settings first then the electrical settings. The cut out bit, the second coil, also has to be set otherwise you won't changeover from the battery to the generator once the generator volts increase when the motor runs above idle. If the battery is going flat then it seems as though the generator isn't charging the battery properly, the gen is faulty or you have a fault on a circuit somewhere that is draining the battery. This may give you a start. Regards RonR |

hey thanks ron for the help. so if i understand correctly the car uses battery power when it idle, the when the revs increase, the cut out switches over to make the car run on the generator. this also charges the battery at the same time.? i took my regulator out and gave it a clean and reset all the air gaps as per the book. i also adjusted it just as the book says. i guess i just need to make sure that it is adjusted properly. is the any thing i should look for maybe the see if there is a problem. thankyou again for your help |
