Today while driving down the Craigieburn bypass extension of the ring road my wife spotted a red mini in the distance. As we caught up we noticed it had E4 MKII on the back. As we went past i looked at the front and saw it was a round nose, but to my amazement i wasn't like the ones i know of. It had a verticle grill in the centre of the bonnet (kinda like the old Mercs).

My thoughts are it could be a very early austin mini (seven) i think.

Anybody here know what it could be or is???

Did it have a boot extension that looked sort of like a morris 1100 on it ? do a google search for wolsely hornet or riley elf and see if that's the critter you saw . Not sure of any other grilles but anythings possible to have been fitted .

It did not have any extensions on the boot...

It looked like any other mini from the back to me.

The front of the car was similar to this, but it had a mini rear end.

WEIRD!

Tis a Wolseley 1000. Basically a mini with a Hornet front look. I don't know if what you saw was original or a copy, because they were only sold in South Africa and only around 480 were made from 1967 to 1969.

It must've been an original. Why would somebody mock up a model like that.

BTW the couple would've been in their late seventies early eighties. Probably shipped the car over with them.

not my cup of tea.

either you get a mini or you get a hornet, take my advice, don't go crossbreeding, and that goes to you people putting roundy fronts on clubbys!

Hunt them down and offer to buy it. I would love one, but I think I'd be scared to drive it. I think the doors and whole front end are unique to that model, so replacing them wouldn't be an option if some idiot in a Falcadore ran into you.

Riley Elf had badges "Elf" and "MkII" on the back. It's possible you read the "Elf" script as "E4". :)

Whatever, it's a ultra rare Sth African import Elf, if it has that grille and a normal boot!

I didn't think about "E4" actually being "Elf". If it did say "Elf", that would make it a Riley and not a Wolseley like the 1000. Is it possible that is a case of model sharing (like the Austin/Morris minis) with negligable differences? Or maybe just an aftermarket badge? Or could it be another car entirely?
