Now that the body coming along I ahve to start thinking of the engine. So a full rebuild is in order.

Any specific tools necessary when working an A-series & gearbox?

All my tools are SAE so they should all be fine.

Ummm, the only special tool that I can think of are a flywheel puller and a long socket (inch and a ?) for undoing the pinion nut.

Yeah, its a "1 and a 1/2 inch" socket, preferably 6 sided only (impact socket), doesnt need to be a deep one though.

The best tools in my collection would be my stud removal sockets. Saved me lots of time in getting all those suds out. Looks like a regular socket, but has rollers inside that grip the stud when you turn it. They are also very good for putting the studs back in and torquing em up

Similar to these ones (but mine came from Canberra and were imperial):

engine crane, fly wheel puller, and a rattle gun with a compressor would make effortless work, and the sockets and ring/open-ended spanners too; like the fellas mentioned.

Torque wrench for reassembly, doesn't have to be expensive (They come up on sale from time to time for about 80 bucks) but they are essential.

I got all the standard stuff for engine rebuilds. I meant tools that are A-series specific. My Jags had a raft of tools specific for XK engines eg cam timing template, cam chain tensioner. These things were XK specifc and useless for anything else. Is there A-series things like that or are they just generic imperial engine fixin tools?

Not really that I can think of, they're pretty agricultural in construction. I just did this again myself and aside from the flywheel puller and sockets to take the flywheel, harmonic balancer and camshaft bolts and nut off the rest is done with a decent tool set.

Feeler gauges for correct assembly, micrometer and verniers to check wear on parts. That's all I can think of for now.

Buy a bendy bar type torque wrench for cheap which are pretty good too
