Post subject:  Need help with my first mini-thanks everybody!
I have just bought my first mini and it is a 1977 clubman. After looking at the chassis codes listed on this site they tell me that it should have a 998cc. It has a 1275 in it now. Engine no 12ydtah###. It has small fibreglass flares like a Ls 1275 with the actual metal of the guards sticking out not just fibreglass, twin tanks, disk brakes up front, 3 gauge dash(tacho). Was it a 998 originally with all these extras added to it or is it something else? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am about to pull it down and restore it so If anyone could help me work out what it is i would be very thankfull. I don't want to destroy a genuine mini if it is something rare (i wish). Thanks.

Minis have been modified and upgraded by various owners since 1959. A completely unmolested totally original mini is rare.

Yours sounds like what half of the people on here would give right arms for. I am sure that a number would gladly swap you a 998 with drum brakes for your 1275 and disks if you want to go original.

Hell, even i would be in that swap !!!!

I think you have a car that had a number of ongoing improvements and you can reap the benefits.

12Y...is that an 1100S motor?

You probably have a modded 1977 Leyland Mini or Leyland Mini S. At least they are good bits that have been added.

12YD/Ta/H is a 1275 LS engine number. Not sure what the 1100S number was???

What size wheels/discs does it have?

Got some pix?

Edit/ I do believe that 12YD/Ta/H is an 1100S motor, too.

12YD/Ta/H was never the 1275LS engine number. Mini Kingdom stuffed up in their catalogue and eveyone has copied their mistake onto the net, and once something is written on the net it becomes true!
That prefix was for the Morris 1100S and Leyland changed the code system twice after that.
Early code 12Yd, 12Y, 12YG
Later code 1200 (Clubman GT)
Last code 12H (1275LS is 12H902UH)

12Yd/Ta/H
12 = Engine capacity = 1275
Y = Country of origin. Y = Australia
D = Fourth variation of power unit = 4:1 final drive ratio.
Ta = Standard ratio remote control centre change.
H = High Compression.

If a 1275LS has that prefix it has had the motor changed.

these bits make it likely to be a Clubman S, the others are right about the motor being from an 1100S (it's a 1275), and if it has 10" wheels then the disks are from a Cooper S, along with the right hand tank.

Sounds like a nice car - has all the mechanical mods that everyone wants

if you paid less than 3 grand and it's drivable, it's a bargain ;)

thanks for all the replies. Yes it has 10' wheels. The car has stuff missing (i think) like no dash-it has a dash board but no fascia-like a glovebox, speaker holes, radio panel etc. Did they come with one standard if it is a clubman s. Where can i find out all the bits a clubman s came with in 1977? Thanks for all your time everybody.

None of the Oz spec clubbies came with a 'dash' You should basically just have an open parcel shelf, with a 2 or 3 guage cluster (3 for a clubman s)..

Clubby S got the lipped guards for 'S' flares, spacered drums all round, 3 clock dash (with tacho) and that's about it..

if u want a stereo ull have to make ur own to hold a head unit slung under the passenger side of the dash and speakers will have to go rear parcel shelf. to put more speakers will need to make more brackets and replace air vents with them. u can by 'fascia' for the dash with a glove box etc but as u wanna keep it orig, dont bother
