$2k for the box already, plus freight + import taxes.. expensive.

5 speeds are supposed to be pretty weak though arn't they? Although straight cut's gotta be fairly strong?

Drool....

For those that have one, how loud are straight cut boxes anyway? Could you use it in a daily car or is it strictly for track days.

Mini Mat reckons (according to his previous posts in regard to 5 speeds) that the 5 speeds aren't that bad as long as they are used properly, that is the 5 gear is an overdrive and should be used as such. Although I'm pretty sure the Doc doesn't rate them, somethng to do with the design.

They are the same strength as the equivalent 4 speed - and the straight cut boxes are pretty strong.

As for noise, you can certainly hear them but they are not *that* load. In a car with good sound proofing/carpets etc the sound is characterful rather than annoying.

The problem with 5 speeds is the extra gear ends up hung off the back of the mainshaft with very little support.
The yellow circles show where the bearings support the mainshaft.
The red circle shows the extra gear on the unsupported end of the mainshaft.

No matter what they say they are not as strong as a four speed.

If you want a STRONG straight cut dog box, latest and greatest is this one... from Swiftune- only a 4 speed though. Geared for rolling starts, 1st probably good for 70MPH...
man, check out those gear widths... 8)

Man those gears are wide. Just think if they had slimmed them down they could have squeezed a fifth gear in between the bearings.

Yeah well other people did that with Mini boxes in the past, Colotti being the first, way back when.
KG Engineering in Melbourne did a 5 and a 6 speed... Mat TheMiniMan had one.

All of the designs I've seen have extra bearings for the mainshaft and layshaft extensions in the speedo drive housing - certainly the Jack Knight and the Tran-X ones have (the box mentionned in the eBay link is a Jack Knight one). No weaker than the equivalent 4 speed.

By the way the one in your photo is a Jack Knight box, and the gear circled is reverse. Fifth gear is on the extreme left.
