1974 Leyland Mini
998cc
1 1/2" SU Carbie
Currently has a BQ needle and is running Rich.
Black smoke, doesn't idle, sometimes doesn't even run all the cylinders.
When you floor it is almost konks out.
Aparnetly it ran fine on a 1100cc

I have got extracters and an aftermarket inlet manifold.
And on a side note, the sexiest dual exhaust ever heard.

What needle do I need?

Please help.

Theres a program you can download, called WINSU. It has a feature where you put in your engines details, and it tells you what needle. You can only use this ferature a couple of times unless you pay for it.

have it looked at by a mini specialist please...it may well be more than just a simple needle change

there`s all sorts of "other" reasons for running rich too

I am running a stock 998 with HIF38 (1 1/2"), RAMFLO filter and an ADS needle. Car never misses a beat and runs excellent!

Standard for an HS4 is ADF I believe.

Lets assume I have tried alot of other things to get it to work before resorting to the needle.

I tried running WINSU, but it gives me a .net framework error.
So I installed the framework it links me to.
Restarted,
Still doens't work.

I have taken my Carbie into my local mini shop and each time I got in, a different person gives me a different answer.
Which has been costly so far.

Please, cant someone save the day with their massive........... intelect?

OK for starters, if it has a BQ needle now it is a fixed needle carb... the floating needle that JAM_IT listed won't fit.

Only book I have handy that lists any needles for HS4 carb is the Leyland black workshop manual.
It has a listing for a 998 automatic with HS4 (1-1/2") carb-
Std needle AC
Rich needle M1
Lean needle H6,
Blue spring in dashpot.

Hope this helps..

Buying needles is a lottery, there are hundreds of `em.

Try this program- http://www.teglerizer.com/suneedledb/index.html

and, this- http://www.mintylamb.co.uk/suneedle/

I'd find someone with a dyno and an A/F meter, that tunes SUs- do it properly...
They should only charge you for the needle they use, not for a bunch of them.

As TheMiniMan said it could well be another problem, flooding, air leak, etc.
