I had the EXACT same issue with my GT only last week.
The answer has been shared for all, but not here.....

OK started stripping the rear end of the convertible and when i got to the fuel tank, i disconnected all the pipes and wires, undid the retaining bolt etc, pulled off the rubber grommet etc and then gave it a gentle yank... wouldnt budge. Yanked harder. No movement. Then i noticed down the front of the tank, there is a foot thing, a bolt and then underneath the car a thin pipe that doesnt lead anywhere. My other minis dont have this, the two spare tanks i have in the garage dont have this but this car does. What is this? What is this for? How can i take the tank out? |

Yep , drain plug that for some reason some had a pipe attached (maybe they were trying to make sure the tank was drained before removal , bloody annoying device) , replace it with an appropriate plug and life will be easier .... |

Get a pair of vice grips on to the drain & break it off, then pry up the tank with a small crow bar or large screwdriver, then when the tank is out throw the barstard away & replace it with a later tank that does'nt have the drain, they are a pain in the arse. Doogie |

bl00dy hell... never seen it before... but i am happy its nothing important. I have already broken it off..!!! hahaha. OK next weekend I am yanking the tank out... have a nice spare LS tank just sitting there that i might replace it with...

OK next weekend I am yanking the tank out... have a nice spare LS tank just sitting there that i might replace it with... Once the drain cock is broken off you can carefully unscrew whats left when you get the tank out and find a suitable bolt to plug the hole and make the tank easy to get in and out. |

Loctite 242 or 262 is your friend. Araldite is petrol resistant too, always has been- but don't use the 5 min stuff, it only lasts 5 mins!

*nods* the petrol resistant glue is a good idea indeed. Will see how i go next weekend otherwise look out for a "cheap bashed-up-from-frustration-using-a-hammer" tank for sale. |
