A few of you might have noticed me crapping on about the Excel Rally Car I was hoping to buy.

The bloke I was going to buy it off has been really good - he understood my situation and has held onto it for quite some time for me to see if I can scrape the money together, but last week told me he needed an answer before easter.

Undortunately I couldn't make all the numbers add up yet - still too much stuff to finish at my new house, and I had to ring him up and tell him not to wait for me

That was a damn hard decision to come to.
Damn I hate having to be sensible.

Back to square one

Mr Bob, I would suggest getting the house ready first Mate with the money, So at least you will have a place ready to relax and play Minis or whatever. No use living in a half finished house. I think you made a very sensble decission. Cheers

Rule of thumb, if the car costs $10,000 you will need $20,000 to buy it and run it. 8) If you can't afford to replace it you can't afford to race it.

Not Gonna Happen - Engine is already sold. Have to get it out of the car tomorrow. I will use this money to pay off some debts, finish some bits and pieces left to do at the house and as a small treat (the large one WAS going to be the rally car :( ), I'm going to buy myself a welder. This way, I can start to learn some of the skills I will need for when I eventually DO get a rally car (that's when not if). I will start a thread in Mini Chat as I need a little advice on welders.

I feel your pain Bob. Dec 04 we bought a house. I've only just started building the shed/workshop, and all that time has been REALLY painful, but in the long run I knew it was going to work out.

Once I get this damn thing built I might actually be able to get myself a mini!!!

Your doing the right thing
I tried to race a car with a young family and with a new house. There were times when we entered but couldn't race coz it dropped a gearbox in practice or times when the car was fine but couldn't enter coz the "something" for the house needed attending.

In short it wasn't very satisfying because I couldn't give the motorsport the attention it needed to get good at the craft. Always chasing something silly on the car rather than getting more competitive. Whats worse, my wife and kids soon got sick of either playing in the dust at Oran park or Amaroo park in the heat or playing in the mud at Oran Park or Amaroo park in the cold. Once you lose family support you might as well give it away. Everything becomes an obstacle.

I had another go at it later in life without the intial heavy burden you are currently facing and it was much more fun.

hard decision you have made but it will work in the end.

That's all true, and good advice and all that - but it doesn't male it feel any better. I want to race while I'm young enough to enjoy it!!

I need to find some alternate income streams.

Some LEGAL alternate income streams :!:

10 years ago i sold my datsun 1600 to fund our honeymoon tickets to Europe. When we came back we bought a house, had two kids, borrowed lots of money and its only now i have can sneak down to the garage and spend only a very short time on what i enjoy. If i need to grind, cut or weld i have to do it on a weekend and only when i can fit it in between swimming, soccer and gymnastics for the kids and i have to work 100miles and hour to get as much done as possible in the short space of time i get.

However, i would say get you house sorted out first and then keep the hobby going.

Dan
