the rod change box has a single rod that runs from the gear shifter to the gearbox and a bracing rod as well to stiffen things up , the remote has an aluminium housing that extends from the gearbox to incorporate the gear lever hole . Remote is more of a rigid mounting and stabilises things better , apart from that you've possibly opened a can of worms as preferences are like the clubbie/roundie debate as to which is better ..... |

Thanks for that, one more thing. Are they interchangable? If i have a rod change at the moment, can i buy a remote typ and bolt it on.....Let me guess, not that easy. |

gearbox housing is totally different, so the short answer is NO. |

I was tossing up which way to go with my van because I have two rod and two remote change boxes here. I have decided on the remote change because I think my housing came up nice and shiny after a degrease. Not that it will last... but hey. |

Remote 'boxes are typically better... The mount at the back of the shifter acts as an excellent engine steady. However, selectors and bits are harder to find second hand and cost more $ new than rod-type. Alot of people like the shift feel of a remote 'box, but my LS has only done 100,000kms, so it still feels nice. Usually the shifter mechanism on the rod boxes wears out and they feel like stirring a bowl full of custard. |

the rod change is easier to remove, and lighter, does feel like crap when worn out but you can't accidentally select reverse and all the rod change gearboxes have synchro on first and the pot joints are incredibly more easy to remove/install when removing or reinstalling an engine, and they don't wear like the previous uni joints. basically its the more modern technically better setup. the remote change makes getting the engine out the top of the car a real pain in the arse, and they rattle like all hell when worn but they called it a "racing style gearchange" for a reason, as it has a firm feel with a short throw which most of us prefer. |
