Hey I am about to replace all the back brake shoes and handbrake cables in one go. I saw these brake adjuster kits from Mini Mania: http://ms-staging.complete.co.uk/Product.aspx?pid=33777 and thought, bugger it if I am going to pull all the brakes off I might as well replace the (most likely) worn adjusters. Do they fit on my car? they do say fits all minis... Also, i have spacer type drims for the back (like cooper offset drums), do any mini rear drum shoes fit? or is it an issue of whether the drums have been machined previously or not? How do i check to make sure I am buying the right shoes? Cheers! |

The way I understood it was that you machined the drums, and fit oversized shoes. Have a look around at prices though, my mate recoed some front drums, and found it cheaper to buy standard shoes and new drums (non spacered). Everyone it seems always machines them. As far as I know, all Minis had the same rear brakes (some had different sized slave cylinders though, depending on what brakes you have up front), so the adjustors should work fine, and definately would be worthwhile. Anyone whos messed round under a mini with worn brake adjustors know what I mean! Spacered drums would use the same shoes as normal drums (depending of course if you machine them or not), internally both drums are the same. |

This is a case where MS looks as though they would be cheaper than Karcraft. MS = approx $17.50 for the kit (screw and 2 wedges) while KC have screw at $14.10 ans wedge (single?) at $9.04 |

Standard drums measure 7.00 inches diameter. Oversizes are + 1/32" and + 1/16". I measure them with a vernier caliper, but a good steel 12" rule will tell you if they are still stock, or oversize. |

Mick, Please check your books- You are right about the fronts but ALL Minis had 1.25" wides on the back, even the S. If you fit 1.5s there, the shoes sit crooked....

Doc!! that little gem of information was straight out of the Leyland Australia Service Publication P/N TP832C dated 1976!! Full title is MINI Comprehensive Workshop Manual. Just checked it again, and for single leaders it says 1.25 both ends and fabulous DON 202 friction material!!

I checked my Leyland book too- it says 1.25 on rear- you must have read the line above... 
Hey Don 202 was good stuff, when I was but a lad... Dewey, Standard rear cylinders are 3/4". Fitted to nearly all Oz drum braked cars. But, Cooper S has 5/8" rears. This is because the front discs work better but transfer more weight to the front- so they had to reduce the braking effort at the rear to prevent lockup. Smaller cylinders there was an easy way out. Good idea to fit them if you are going to fit front discs...

I can testify to that.... I had larger wheel cylinders on the back of my Cooper S after I lazily decided not to swap the wheel cylinders when I put dry radius arms in... they locked up a lot, and *may* have attributed to it's demise - tho my lack of ability was surely more to blame |
