alternator arrived today and I went outside to check the wiring on my old one and before I accidentally hooked something up wrong and risking blowing things up I need to know how to wire it up properly.

The lucas has the standard 3 spade connectors all in a group with no markings. One is a red wire that is thinner then the others (i'm guessing IGN light wire?) and the other two are black wires in original thread insulation running back into the loom and then who knows where.

The rover alternator has three connections (2 spade, one screw) with the markings 'W' or 'M', B+ and ++IND.

Which goes where! And is there some test (I have a multimeter) to see which wire is which out of the two black insulated ones?

I did a search and there's a few threads on 3wire--2wire alternators but not much on a 3wire-3wire swap. Given the lucas has no markings near the spades i'm kinda lost :).

Cheers guys

I have used the Rover alt on my LS - plugged straight on. Which is the screw terminal you speak of? Mine was 3 spades--->3spades, couldn't be easier. Just amke sure you use your original Lucas pulley, or the rover one will spin too fast.
