Brake dust contains asbestos so you need to be careful. Most mechanics avoid contact with brake dust by employing apprentices.
Get a can of CRC Brake-clean (don't use the Nulon product as the brake dust tastes much nicer than Nulon) Remove the brake drum and spray everything (shoes, springs, backing plate, etc.) with brake-clean and hose off with water.
If you have no previous experience and you own a digital camera take a before photo so you will know which spring goes where.
Take note of the shoes that come off as they may have leading ends on the shoes. Your new shoes must be refited the same way (or the right way if they have been previously fitted wrong!)

Pull the adjuster apart and coat the threads with some sort of anti-seize compound.

Don't forget to re-adjust the brakes before you finish.

Yeah...don't forget to back off the adjusters to allow for the new bigger shoes....when you have the new shoes fitted and the drum retaining screws in...pump the pedal a few times until firm...this also centres the shoes and allows another adjustment to get them spot on.

All sorted 8)

teh digital camera was a great idea
turns out that rhs shoes were put on the wrong way and that was done by a so called brake specialist

thanks for the ideas and suggestions

Sorry Mick you missed out on your call out fee MMMMMMM they tasted nice and were nice and cold

job took 3 hours to do

I was interupted by a phone call from my Mum asking if i could come over to help her look for my Dads finger that he had removed on the Triton bench saw
She was sent home from the hospital to try and find it and she was a tad emotional. however wasnt able to find the finger :( I think that one of teh dogs had run off with it)
My Dads ok they will operate tomorrow to tidy it up.

fortunately he only types two fingered like me so he will cope ok :D

I have had to look for my dads finger as well. I thought that the dogs had eaten it but I eventually found it being carried away by ants.
