My rego is due on my car but i don't think it will be ready by the rego expiration date, is there a time frame of if rego expires on when rego requires to be renewed?

my car is still being repaired from a cracked head

three months i believe it is.

after expiring, during that period, if you are caught driving the car, you should 'be on the way to the pink slipper'

And, if you finally renew it (say) 2 months after it ran out, you only get 10 months effective rego because it's dated from the day it lapsed... :cry:
Almost makes it worthwhile to go get a blueslip and start again! :lol:

Yes..that just happened to me :evil: If you want to change the date you need to go through a blueslip.

Don't know if teh rules have changed in the last 5 years..However, back then I was in a similar situation (in NSW).

local rego shop offered the following options:

1. Keep the plates. When car is ready, pay single day rego fee, take to garage for ticket, pay full rego and receive remainder of 12 months rego (from date of original expiry).

2, Surrender plates. When car is ready, take to garage for ticket (at no cost), pay full rego and receive a full 12 months rego (and new plates).

Seemed like a no-brainer....

Somethings have changed then. You can renew the registration by getting a $26 pink inspection slip up to three months after the rego has expired. But you cannot drive the car until it is registered. And as the Doc pointed out the rego is back dated to the original expiration date.

After three months past the expiration of the rego it is necessary to obtain a blue inspection certificate costing $45 which starts the registration process again with new plates. For a fee - original registration plates can be "stored"

In each case though, you need a green third party insurance slip anmd then pay the RTA the registration fee.

You are legally entitled to drive an unregistered car to an authorised inspection point or two a licensed mechanic for repairs. Should it fail the inspection then the law is a grey area concerning the car being driven home. There is no insurance cover on any unregisterd car being driven anywhere unless special provisions have been made.

Mine was off the road and unregistared for almost 3 years. All I did was go to the internet site for renewals ,plug in my rego number and paid.No road worthy , no new plates , just some sort of admin fee for being unregistered for more than 90 days.Maybe I was just lucky.

Nope , just shows how lax SA's rules are compared to NSW , I dread to think how unroadworthy a car could (not saying your's is but brakes could be seized from sitting etc ....) be after sitting for 3 years ....

yeah in sa after 90 days they send you a not to either hand in your plates or not drive it then when you re register it they charge a $30 admin fee to bring it to the current date no worries
