Post subject:  Steering column stalks...

ive noticed in a few pics that some mini's have a left hand side stick out of their steering rack (assumedly for windscreen wipers) i was wondering if it was a rover.. and weather i can put on into my morris/clubman and if anyone has done it how hard it would be... as im getting tired of having to watch the road and try and feel for the windscreen wipers as i cant see where im driving :S ..damn rain..

OK I reckon I know what you mean BUT you've got your terminology wrong.

The steering rack is the horizontal portion under your feet when driving. It is a rack gear and is moved by the pinion gear at the end of the steering COLUMN. Now the column, to which the steering wheel attaches, does come in several varieties. Some of these have two stalks.

Twin stalk columns were standard in late Mokes and all Rover minis from about 1978. The Australian variety had the indicators on the right, the Pommy ones have the indicators on the left. The indicators, horn and wipers are controlled by the column stalks but the head lights are sitll on the dash.

Late 90s air bag equipped cars have intermittant function for the wipers so the switch has one more position. They also have the head light switch on the column.

You can interchange them all so long as you get the whole assembly, not just the stalks and shroud. Air bagged cars have different steering wheel splines so earlier wheels don't fit.

If you are handy with powertools and wiring, you could adapt something from a different car. I got the stalks from an Excel, they have the usual washer, indicators, headlights (high and low) and 2 wiper speeds plus 5 intermittant levels, if you adapt the excel wiper motor too. :D

I've had no probs reaching the wiper switch, since I put inertia reel belts in the front of mine. 8)
Pity I can't do Barney's too, the friggin' early Clubby seat base (in a roundnose shell) fouls the reel..

hmm thanks for the idea barney.. yeah im good with powertools.. wiring should be too complicated... ill look into that option.. but late model stalks seems easier...

Running Honda gear in one of mine, doesn't really matter, they all do the same thing.

I actually saw you can buy a generic one from Supercheap for about $60. Not a bad idea for all new switch gear.
