Post subject:  driving a modern manual
i tried a 97 corolla the other day
is it me or are new cars really really hard to drive?

i kept revving it up too high
the clutch engaged so far out
it was so quiet i couldnt hear the engine/friction point
the gear shifting was so slight and knobbly

hey Duc, you gotta learn how to drive a manual before driving one.... :lol:

My wifes lancer (02 model) has a pretty soft clutch.....but then again most of the manuals I drove were v8's.... :lol:

nothing like the clutch on a truck to sort out yer legs take a good look at truck drivers who drive american trucks left leg is bigger than right muscle wise

yeah i;ve gotta agree about the clutches on new cars.......they're so bloody hrd to not drop the clutch on.....and the pedal travel is always about a kilometre long! they just have no feel to em

I used to have an old school series 3 rx7 before i got my new car in march.... geese it was hard to get used to the clutch in the new car. absolutely no feel/feedback.... i still sometimes seem to slip the clutch when i go from driving my mini back to the new car.

there is nothing like a mini for feel. they are great. you feel every bump, shake, everthing..... fun!

I learnt to drive trucks in the Army on LHD 6X6 Studebakers. No syncro on any gear and if you pushed the cluch in too far you hit the starter button. After a while you started to walk in circles cause your left leg became more muscular :wink:

It's not that they are hard to drive, it's cause you don't need to drive them. You need to "drive" a Mini!

This has a lot to do with most late model cars having a cable type clutch where older cars are hydraulic.

Can't say I have had any trouble driving modern cars (but then again I drive a fair few in my job). My only problem is they are so damn boring :lol:

Power steering, over assisted brakes, light clutch, too much sound deadening. I like a hard clutch, hard brakes, no brake booster, no power steering and no sound deadening. If it were legal on a road car I'd have a hole in my firewall with the air filter poking through!

<edit> The only modern manual I had issues with was a late 90s Honda Civic - I drove over a big bump slowly in second and it started to bunny hop all by itself! And my foot was off the clutch. Had similar problems with little 3 cylinder cars like Suzuki Altos, you couldn't drive along at low rpm very smoothly.

Dont have any problems with the Trueno clutch.........very nice and easy to use.

Mind you the exedy clutch on my brothers old RX7 was a bastard.......either in or out and nothing in between. Was good for relatively high rpm launches though :P

Sounds like anto should take a hyundai excel for a drive. It's got everything he wants, and half the rest of the car doesn't work either.
