What's the point of having the fancy belt if no-one can see it?

Gday all - well I installed the timing belt kit (Triger)however I have an issue with the crank pulley now. I cant see how far it has to go in on the nose of the crank. When I tighten the BF bolt on the crankshaft, the pulley itself fouls the belt cover. What do I have to do to get this not to happen. I am seriously contemplating cutting the shroud of the belt cover to suit. Can I shim up the crank pulley? I know Kev runs one and has done for a long time. Any advice would be welcomed. Here are some piccies of the setup. Can I run the belt drive without the cover? Or do I cut the housing or make a custom guard or just shim up the crank pulley against the crank belt cog. Rob I used to run one of these trigger kits on my last car and the cover fitted no probs but you did need to run the original thrower washers so it diid not rub, check the alignment of the fan belt to see if the harmonic balancer is in line, do run the cover as it only takes one rock to wreck the belt and it is amazing as to where those litlle rocks can get to

Well I was thinking of cutting down the oil thrower and inserting it between the toothed belt and the crank pulley to space it out - would this be the way to go??. It only misses by a bees dick and this would allow me to fit the cover. Thanks guys. I know the belt would look bling without the cover however as Jon pointed out, an errand stone or twig could make me come undone. Hooroo Rob Forsyth Miniot!! |

Mate from memory there either used to be a washer in the kit or you used the original thrower ( we are talking nearly 20 years since I had my hands on one) and it is needed to stop the belt walking of the front as well and rubbing on the cover Jon |

If you need to shim it with the original oil thrower or otherwise with shims, do so. I wouldn't like to run without a cover, think of the grime and wet sludge that would go up into a belt in a rainstorm. Once you put the shim or washer in, it will probably bring the pulley and belt back into alignment with the top pulleys. |

I was contemplating the shim thing but just needed confirmation from you guys. Are these belts suseptible to walking off the cogs or do they pretty well remain in place(I would say they would stay in place pretty well...) In any case I am going to cut down the oil thrower(as it has the keyway for the crank)and if I have to shim the water pump pulley I will. At the moment they both line up as is so I will have to shim the pump pulley too(4 flat washers will do the trick I would think) Hooroo Rob Forsyth Miniot!! |

Rob You should not have to shim the water pump pulley out as they should be lined up when the bottom pulley is clear of the cover, the belts will walk but the idea is to stop the belt rubbing on the front cover which can cause real problems if it happens so thats why the thrower is a bit larger to act as guard Jon |

Interesting... I wonder if i will have problems with my belt drive, same brand. you will have to ask Kev how he got his to fit? |

Been away, in Tassie... 
Yes I've run one for 12 years- with a standard harmonic balancer and the standard belt drive front flanged washer, it fits no problem. Only adjustment needed was fit the 3mm spacer provided to the water pump hub, and move alternator forward too, to align V belt.
Sounds and looks like you are missing the flanged washer from the BD crank pulley.... |
