Suspected head gasket was gonna go.

It did.
Today.
On the sydney to coast cruise.

Luckily I made it home.

Got the head off in record time for me, about 10 mins. No more stuffing around with extractors :D.

From what Im looking at I am REALLY consideringa head rebuild and go unleaded at the same time.

From the attached piccy can anyone else tell me their opinion ? Also, 1 out of the
8 pushrods can be pulled from the head from the bottom. ie, the bigger end fits
right through the hole in the head. Is this normal ?

Max - a rebuild would be on the cards and a skim to remove the pitting around the water holes. The valves could be reused and will depend on the faces. While it is orff, why not :D

Considering every thing Max the head looks in pretty good shape - bit of a builtup of crud at the front of the head. Your pushrods are jammed because the gunk has hardened around the holes. I have a 12.7mm rifle bore cleaner(round wire brush )that fits in there perfectly(use a 5.56mm one to get around the edges with the rods in place...)

At least you got home. Was it a good cruise or was it marred by the driving wind and rain(like here!!)

I know it's a whole lot more work, but with Ribena, I had the hassle last year of having to replace the head gasket 3 or 4 times in the space of about 4 months - turns out that the block was warped from front to back.

Like I said, heaps more work involved (Take out the motor and strip it down etc etc etc ) and of course, heaps more dollars involved but.......

Cheers

The weather was PERFECT. Absolutely PERFECT. Clear sky, not hot, roads were clear. Was bloody awesome.

Just like the last Ausmini sydney to coast cruise :)

Kazjim has leant me a 12G202 head, so while that is on my engine, ill get my other 12G202 rebuilt.

Just gotta get the radiator out now....the crappy part..

Block looks to be in good nick. In between cylinders 2 and 3 towards back of block, it has a "B" stamped into it. Is this from the factory ? And with this still there, would it mean that block may have never been skimmed in its life ?

Ahhh - how did the radiator removal go...that is right up there with thermostat changeouts and pulling wisdom teeth!!!

Again Max the top of the pistons look good too and should clean up ok. Check them by rocking them in the bores - there is a wee bit of movement but if the crown is getting close to the bores, it may be rebuild time.

As the good Dr says, get hold of one of those ACL head gaskets - they really are good.

Took the easy option for removal.

Unbolted the water pump, unbolted the radiator, and liften the whole lot out.
