Post subject: | Alloy cleaners |
Ok... stripped the gearbox today @ Brickworx (Steve did most of it ![]() I wanna get the gearbox professionally cleaned (most likely chemically) as well as the bell housing, diff housing, etc. - all alloy case bits Does anyone know anyone (pref in SA) that can do this. I called into one place and they said they wouldnt wanna risk it as their acid cleaner could etch the acid too much and turn the gasket faces to crap... any help appreciated Thankyou. |

Leave it with Steve - he'll clean it for you!! (I now fear for my life) I think Mollasses may eat alloy, check the previous posts on the subject or do a search Otherwise get ye old toothbrush out and start scrubing, you could get a pack of ten for $15, cost you more in freight to send the box! |

get some old bed sheets, go to supercrap and buy 10 cans of 'export' degreaser (in a can) its vicious s$%t spray box with the stuf all over, wrap it in sheets and soak them with it too, chuck it in a rubbish sack and leave for a coupla days, than un wrap, wipr as much off with sheet as possable, hose clean, attack remaining crap with 10 pack of toothbrushes. OR buy like 2 4l bottles of water baised degreaser,(alkaline salts) put g/b in a plastic container just bigger than the box, pour in degreaser, top up with water, leave for a day, attack with toothbrush either way, ya goina get dirty! or: find some 8yr old boys, $2 per hr should get it clean in about 4hrs! |

Mollases will dissolve aluminium alloys ![]() Do NOT use for cleaning gearbox! Great for removing rust only only steel or cast iron. Will not remove dirt or grease. willy, just steam clean it, then if you want it really shiny on the outside, have it bead blasted ![]() |

Post subject: | costic |
Ok willy, Come down to minisport, we will throw it in our costic bath (over weekend), then in our hot tank parts washer, and then if you are really keen you can put it in our sandblaster (external only).. Dont worry everyone the costic solution is fine on alloys..... see you soon. |

Some of the water based degreasers have exactly the same chemicals in them as dishwasher powder. A $8 box of powder can make about $160 worth of the bottled stuff sold at Supercrap. Watch out though. Leave it in too long and the surface will turn a dull dark grey, like my carby ![]() I've just tried some Ali-brite. Supposed to be the duck's nuts but it was crap for an alloy inlet manifold. |
