Post subject:  Changing oil... assistance required
Ok, I'm ashamed to admit this but i normally get other people to change the oil in my cars.... I'm going to change the oil tomorrow by myself for the first time but first i need some help...

What type of filter would i need to purchase if i were to be running an MG Metro engine??? That would make it a 1275 A+.

Do the same places that stock filters sell the copper washers for the sump plug? If so what should i be asking for?

How much oil does it take?


Unfortunately by the time i get to my car tomorrow evening all the shops will be shut. I kinda need to change the oil tomorrow so i can't go and take a look to read the numbers or take pics. That's why i'm asking you knowledgable crew. :)

the same type that you remove from there :wink:

they are identical to the screw on type filters for the late model clubmans
i'd just reuse the copper washer unless its fragged, otherwise take it in to sprints or wherever you get your filter from and ask them for a replacement.

Do not be ashamed Mol...I have done hundreds of oil changes and it is a messy horrible job....

careful of hot oil!!

make sure you remove the old rubber/neoprene gasket from the block...that is...make sure it comes away with the used spin on filter.

make sure the groove is clean where the seal came from (yes, on your back with a light looking up)

do not overtighten the filter....you just need to compress the gasket slightly...check for leaks/tighteness each day after you have done it if you are not sure...the trick is getting it tight enough to seal, but without squashing the gasket to oblivion and tihght enough so that it does not unspin and dump your oil :oops:

its a good idea to 3/4 fill the new filter with clean oil before fitting....and to make sure the new gasket is wet with smeared clean oil before fitting.

Do not overfill the engine....if you do...and this you find after running it several times...crack the sump plug and let some out (do not overtighen the sump plug....that ping!! noise means trouble!)

hot oil + scraped nuckles not pretty!!!
also watch when you fill her up again, the rocker cover fills with oil real quick and can overflow leaving oil everywhere, also use a funnel to fill, much easier. :D

If it has a screw on oil filter from a clubman then it is a Z418 or equivalent size oil filter. Hope that helps

Hyundai Accent for a start...maybe Laser 1600...they don't have a lot of volume though...they look about 2/3 as big as what you should be using....I think :oops:

Z418 is the right filter and is easy to get. Used on V6 Camrys/4 Runner/Hilux and a bunch of imported Toyotas. Every auto part store has them. :)

A couple of tips:

1) Make sure you prime the new filter with some fresh oil before you screw it on. About 3/4 full is okay.

2) I always turn the engine over with the Coil HT lead disconnected until the oil pressure gauge shows a reading. Then reconnect the HT lead and start the engine. This way the pump is sending fresh oil on startup instead of running the bearings dry.
