hi, just wondering if anyone new what minis had as a base primer originally underneath? i've stripped all the tar crap off the bottom and theres a light brownygreen coat of paint on there. is it enamel based? can i just primer over this or does it have to be all stripped back to metal? i don't want to use acrylic primer over it just for it to react and come off. |

on the old minis it was a red coloured enamel undercoat(used to be known as red oxide) so if you can top coat should be enamel as well for originallity but it chips and may blister later on if you want a great job go back to bare metal and use the latest paint technology you wont be sorry -- give your pride and joy 13 coats huh ![]() |

i'd say take it all back and then spray it with "etch primer", not just normal primer. etch primer contains an acid which actually digs into the metal and protects it as opposed to normal primer which just sits ontop. normal primer is fine for a quick touch up of a rusty spot but if you planning for a full respray go for etch primer |
