Post subject:  Straight Cut gears

G'day Guys;

There is a set of Straight Cut gears for sale locally here and was wondering if anyone knows what the benifits are for having these types?
Is there a good and bad side to them? I have heard they are a lot more noisier than the standard helical cut gears? Is that true?
Also what is the preffered final drive ratio for a Moke with 13 inch wheels, being used for town/highway use?

Cheers guys

MUCH more gearbox whine - would only recommend one for a high power/race application. They are supposed to be stronger & slightly more efficient (allowing more power at the wheels), but some aftermarket gear sets aren't as strong as the original mini helical gears.

You can't go past the stock Moke 4.2:1 diff, though a 3.7 would be nicer for highway cruising.

yer straight cut is for race only

and i'd go a 3.4 diff with moke 13" wheels, make for very nice highway cruising

I wouldn't say for race only, although there probably more suited to that application. I had a straight cut box in an old 1293 clubby I had about 9 years ago. They claim to be better in the strength department, I could'nt tell the difference. Day to day driving I would'nt bother, unless you get them cheap.

Or like the noise they make? I do...

There are lots of things claimed for straight cuts, they are really no stronger than a helical cut box but they do transmit the power with less loss, they do wear the surface of the gear faster as the surface area of contact is actually less for the same width helical cut gear, this actually makes the helical cut gear more durable than the straight cut and that is why straight cut boxes are really not for road use, in a short time the case hardening on the straight cut gear will wear out if the material is not far superiour and the hardening first class and from all reports even the JK ones are wearing .

If you are worried about the noise the old trick is to top the gears to stop most of the whine which is made by the gears actually bottoming when the teeth mesh

1st gear is straight cut on all the helical boxes, so wind it up in 1st to see what it sounds like

Thanks for the reply guys.
Well it looks like my decision is made!
Will give the old Rod change box an overhaul and change the final drive ratios.
Cheers guys

what final drive ratio?

i wouldnt use straight cut gears on the road

& mokes with 13 inch wheels/tyres will need final drive ratios of 4.1:1---4.2:1---or 4.3:1

anything taller & you`d be silly

oky-doky?
