I just (last friday) instigated a policy with Shannons to cover my mini for a agreed cover of $6,000 - salvage rights - windscreen a year etc for $204. Its for 8,000 kms a year periodic driving.

Now I am much older than 17 but i had the provision of nominating under 25 drivers. The basic excess for me is $400 and an under 25 nominated driveris another $400. The excess for a non nominated driver is $1,500.

May I suggest you transfer the rego to your father (or mother) and then have them insure the car with you as the nominated driver.

However, don't lie to the insurance company - any insurance company - if they catch you out they will wipe you and you will have a hard time ever insuring any car.

when i got my (non mini) car at the age of 17, i had issues insureing it. The car was in my name, but because i was 17 and still on my L's, we had to insure the car under my mothers name. I recently got it changed, BTW. I now have to pay extra. It was actually cheaper to have the car in mums name with me as the driver 100% than it is to have the insurance in my name.
(Dont aask me how it all works though...our insurance broker is an old friend. MAybe that was the difference - ie he actually went to an effort to get me a good deal as a youngen)

I've been insured with shannons since i was 17..

I'm now 21 and pay considerably less than i was then with a 60% NCB etc..

They gave me the same thing at first, but ring them up again, state how your a member of the club and they told you to go through them and you have other friends your age in the club insured via shannons and see what they do.

Expect to pay in the vicinity of $1200pa+ full comp..

try gio classic car insurance. I met a guy with a turbo insured for $300. He was probably mid 20s.

hmm thats odd. i only *just insured my car with Shannons for an agreed value of $7000 for $848 per year. I did have a bit of trouble with it because i had a claim last year with another insurance company, so my no claim rating was gone. But still, thats odd they refuse to insure you. im 22 and it didnt seem to be a problem. I did have insurance for like 4 years with my other car which i think they took into consideration.
Its crap if Shannons wont insure you, because every other company i rang up wouldnt insure a Mini for more than $1800 as the value.

Yeah definalty go GIO Vintage and Veteran.. Cheaper then Shannons and offer everything they do. They'll insure a 17yo.. and they don't stuff you around like Shannons do.

Funny thing, I found that GIO vet & vint were dearer than shannons and you didn't get as much out of them.

Bottom line, ring aroungd the specialist insurers and don't be afraid to ask if you can change things to make the premium cheaper. Limited Kms, alarm/immob, agreed value amount, club rego (If applicable) etc.

you might be suprised.

Good Luck

I concur, GIO came out more expensive by almost double from Shannons. Ring around first!

Well for me Shannons refused to insure me twice due to age.. Then when they eventually said yes, they wanted more then double what GIO wanted... I'm insured with GIO full comp. agreed value of $12K, 1 free windscreen replacement a year and full salvage rights, no garage, redfern, no alarm/imobiliser, male under 25, still on P plates.. and I'm paying a bit over $300 a year.

EDIT: Your car must be over 30 years old (which most mini's would be) to be counted as Classic.

If you go onto your parents insurance, you will inherit their no claim bonus if you have no accidents whilst you were on it, and will get a better policy price once you are out on your own.

went shopping around again today, and found i can get racq insurance without all these hassles. only problem is, apperently they dont replace smashed windsheilds and the like. it was also interesting to find that their market value for a mini is only $1900. if i go with these guys ill definately be paying the extra $160 a year for agreed value as the car was double that value before i began restoring it...
