Something is not right here - found in the oil when drained. Motor was running fine so I'm confused. [tail-light lens included in shot for scale]

Anyone recognise this lot? Where did thes come from?

looks like 2 split pins and some sort of small bracket?

they are like 1/4" wide metal stips - and they are riveted together to form circles

I'm just wondering if it is the ball cage of the main bearing in the gearbox - it's the only thing I can think of

Ball bearing cage as said above. Maybe diff?

Yep, a bearing cage.
The balls will still be running aorund in their tracks but the shaft will be loose as buggery.

Take the bits to whoever built your gearbox and ask for a please explain.

Thanks for your help guys - here's the culprit - I recognise the rivets in the cage

Pic thanks to Mini Spares UK

It is a Diff bearing that has let go. That cage is identical to the metal I found

So the question then becomes - I can drop off the diff with the engine left in can't I? [remote box]

Nah - on second thoughts, I think I need to have a real good look at the rest as well - Ah well gives me something to do over winter - See you all in the spring.
