I'm curently running HIF 44 off a Metro on my 1360 and previously a HIF6. But I also have a HS6 from an old Austin 1800 which could be used.

In the light of recent comments by KC about the limitations of the HIFs at high revs in Minimag I'm considering going to the HS with the external float chamber. Has anyone done a comparison of the two types?

Inlet manifold is an Oselli Torquemaster.

I prefer the HS series, but in saying that, it`s simply cause i`m more used to them than the HIF series, i am gaining more knowledge & experience with the HIFs more recently tho & am starting to gain more confidence in tuning them,,,they`re worlds apart in the "Tuning" dept from eachother tho, very very different reacting/response than the good old HS carbs

for cost, ease & less time spent sorting, i`d go the HS.

No offence intended here but--> anyone writing a book about minis 30 years ago may not have experienced such worn or stuffed-with components as we are finding these days.

I've got an HIF38, haven't put it on the car yet. I like it, once I figured it out, especially the slightly more advanced choke mechanism. They are supposed to flow more than an equivilent HS, but I'm not so sure. Certainly, I like the integrated float bowl, will have less fuel surge problems... although you can fit two float bowls to an HS to fix that. If you already have an HIF44, and it is tuned well, I really don't see the point in going to all the effort to 'upgrade' to an HS6. Although if you've got it and like to play...

I have heard the bimetal strip in the HIF's so-called `upgraded' choke mechanism can be a PITA. Turbo guys remove it and fit a bit of steel instead.

Make mine the HS, and I prefer the ones with fixed needles as they don't wear themselves and the jet out like the spring loaded type do. Provided they are centred properly. :wink:

Yeah I prefer the fixed needles too, but I have one of those adaptor bits that allow you to run a fixed needle in a spring-loaded type carb. 8)

That bimetal strip is my only concern about the carb, but I figure I'll learn if it is a problem or not when I put the carb on.
