Hi Everyone,
I've been stripping a 1275 short motor I picked up today. The camshaft in it looks quite hairy compared to a standard 1275 cam. It has 239 stamped on the end and one of the sources I have says this is a 648/649 bmc cam. Can anybody confirm/deny this?

Cheers,
Anto.

Anton - with the 2 and a half cylinders you are running on now, this cam will make your car sound like a 13B rotary on drugs...

It is a stage 5 cam as well so would be pretty hairy for the road(let alone idling at lights...could frighten people...lol). It is also reflected in the chart Mick supplied...

Good luck with it...

Yeah that chart is where I looked up the number originally, it's very useful.
Now considering my head is stage 2/3 at best, and the bottom end is likely to be pretty stock, I should probably stick to an RE-13, much as I like the idea of having a race cam in my motor

I'd stick it in a spare motor on the bench, fit the head and a degree wheel then plot the lift vs rotation. Pretty easy to get an idea how mad it is.
I'd set rocker clearance to .019" in absence of any info, then you can compare with stocko BMC cams.

Otherwise, just get it ground to a known, decent grind- eg RE13 or whatever. Usually, cams can take more than 1 regrind- I have an RE13 that's now on its 4th grind from new! And it still has meat left.

Just a thought, is there any significance that the 239 engraving is followed by 'sp' (at least i think, it's hard to read)?

It means you are spashell Anto  :D

Saw Renata at Go-Karts today....she wants to go to Araluen but we need a foolproof comms plan for Norman....I suggested we all give her our mobile numbers so that at least on carrier may have coverage....I also said I should try and draw off a Satellite phone from work  :D

Just a quick question, what is the difference between cam and valve lift?
I'm thinking cam lift is at the lifter and valve lift is at the valve?

If it was a factory 649 camshaft the fuel pump lug would be replaced by another helical gear the same as the dizzy drive gear. So maybe a regrind?
