Post subject:  Rad pressure: Dumping fluid

Hi guys.

Its not my car, but a friends. Its a new engine, and its running fine, and isnt overheating, infact its staying nice and cool. But when he stops it pumps out a little bit of fluid.
The engine is an a+ and i think its a metro turbo block/head, not running a turbo.

Any ideas why its doing this?

The radiator has just been pressure tested and chemically cleaned, and is fine. He has a 13pound pressure cap. Should he go heavier?14?15?

I had this problem with both ours with new UK radiators. The little sealing lip in the neck was dirty and had bits of scale or flux or whatever on it.
Just try rubbing it smooth with a bit of 180 or whatever wet/dry paper. Also wipe the rubber seal on the cap clean.
No problem now.

If the radiator has been filled to the top , it may be just forcing a little of the coolant out , until it gets to its correct working level , usually about half inch or so from top when motor is cold . When hot the coolant expands and has to go somewhere . If you have an expansion tank , the radiator will expell the excess coolant and it will suck the coolant back in as the motor cools .........

All true- but mine dribbled a bit, even when the tank level had gone down the usual amount...
It just didn't quite seal well enough to hold pressure.

Thanks guys

I have a feeling that it is a standard aussie radiator, would this make a difference?

The standard radiator in the mini is not meant to be filled to the brim. It is supposed to be left about 2cm below the neck to allow expansion room. If it is filled right up it will dribble a bit out until it reaches the right level.

Yes, remember though that water expands- it IS full when hot, which is when it matters.
