Post subject:  How To? Steering Rack Refurb

Hi

I noticed at the weekend that I have some play in the steering rack on the Passenger side (definitely not the tie rod) seems to be inside the rubber boot.

I have done a search and I see it has been suggested that there is not too much to replacing the innards of the rack, rather than replacing the whole rack. There also seems to be a good saving of the $$'s as well, which would be good.

Has anyone out there done this and if so, can you tell me how easy it is (I know I have to get the rack out first), what parts I will need and if there is anything special to look out for.

Cheers

Rick

Okay - its probably a worn rack end (inside the rack). Experts tell me that its impossible to replace whilst on the car (unlike commodores etc) so its a rack out job.

The rack R&R is not a nice job but its not technically difficult - just physical.

The best way to do the repair is to get a refurbished rack from either Brickworx or Minisport - both in Adelaide - then you know its all good.

Hullo,

if it's more than just simply replacing the boots and oiling the steering rack then take it to a professional and put in a new reconditioned rack. If you don't really know what you are doing then this area of the car is best left to a pro as it is a very critical part that can lead to serious problems (ie, steering lock up at high speed.)

Any changes to the tie rod end also means wheel alignment anyway...

Sorry for being a spoil sport but I would not take the chance...

OK if its inside the rack boot it is either the tie rod( thats what its called the end is just that a tierod end) or the felt bush in the end of the rack tube, both will need the rack to be pulled out to fix :D
