| Post subject: | Oil leak on filter housing |
Is it common for filter housings to leak on the top like this? 
I'm assuming that its not leaking from somewhere else and dripping there because that would likely make a mess everwhere, but this just pools on the top of the housing then drips down the sides and makes a mess underneath... I was planning on getting a spin on before the next oil change but thought i'd check first if that should also fix this leaking problem... Geoff |

Not uncommon at all  
Check: The Rocker Cover gasket all round....it could be dribbling down from above the tighness of the oil line coming into the top of the filter.... whether there is oil being pumped out of the Filter housing to block gasket.. whether there is oil being pumped out of the electrical sender on the top right of the Filter housing.....these are notorious leakers... But First ..brush the entire area witha Hydrocarbon based degreaser (glendale make red stuff) rather than the caustic soda based ones...then carefully hose off....and make sure the entire area is clean...
drive it round the block (not far!!)...thebn see where the oil is coming from...Guuuudddd Leeerrrkkk

A friend has just "cured" a leaking oil filter sender from leaking. It involves the aluminium foil that seals a tin of Milo...yes the stuff inside the lid where you break the seal. Use your Milo tin foil or any other similar material (Shim Brass?) to make up a Blanking Plate for the two small holes that feed the sender. Use two paper gaskets either side of the Milo tin Blanking Plate it and some good permatex or other gasket goop on either side. Bolt it all up and prey to the BMC Oil Leak gods it works

Those filters with the bypass switch were fitted to Deluxe etc, never the Cooper S. A better cleaner more user friendly solution is bin that whole filter & housing. Then fit a spin-on one from a later Clubby. No more washing out those grotty canisters... or fitting that damn rubber O-ring seal.

or slicing the end of a finger on the razor sharp edge where the O Ring goes 
I soon learned to coax the old O Ring out with a small jewellers screwdriver and then clean the annulus out with a rag over the blade...
