| Post subject: | Rear window rubber |
Gents, Just finished installing the rear window and have a few issues. I bought the mini one piece window rubber. I installed it and fitted the locking strip, however the top two corners have wrinkles in them externally and all internal corners have a wrinkle in them. Is this the norm or is there something that i did incorrectly?

I don't think it is normal to get those wrinkles, but I put mine in a few months ago and mine has them too. Mine are only on the inside so it doesn't bother me much, it doesn't leak. With yours on on the outside as well it may end up leaking, so fixing it would be handy. Sorry I havn't solved your problem but at least you know it's not just you. Steve. |

Prolly just the way it was fitted up, whatever technique you may have used has pulled the rubber toward the corner. Reinstalling it would remove it with some care. |

The 'one piece' window rubbers are in fact usually just a cut length that is glued together, which doesn't necessarily mean it is exactly the right length. Maybe it was a bit long? Having said that I got the same thing happen on the inside of my rear screen, but that was done by a professional and the seal was cut to length. |

Mine has wrinkles in the corners on the inside. It's just due to the bend radius of the frame. The rubber isnt able to compress that far as it's going around the corner. you may notice that it pulls in a little bit on the outside of the radius as well. |

Mines 1 piece but i aint got the slightest hint of a wrinkle... That would annoy me if i had that.!!! |

I know this is late but if you buy a rear windscreen rubber in Australia now, it tends to be from the UK and their rear wind screens are wider. No one is supplying the Mk1 style rubbers any more (Let me know if you know different). The trick in Oz is to cut the cut and glue the UK one to fit your OZ one. Make sure you cut 10mm short or more. This will ensure you don't get the wrinkle in the corner. I had the privelege of buying a windscreen rubber in the UK and the corners were virtually moulded already so why can't we get the same here? As we speak I am struggling with a rear screen rubber that came by local purchase and is way to long. Why should I have to be the mug who fails to get a good seal? It should be done at the suppliers. Back me up please! |

I thought its beause some window seals are moulded to have the tighter bends in them and others are just straight, and they're the ones that bunch up.

Mini King gets his `one piece' ones in from UK, they are made to Mk1 length already. |

Agreed (maybe)- I had to cut 1" off mine. But the rear window frame on my car is twisted slightly- other people here have fitted them with no cutting. |

I don't think I've had any the same length in recent years, they have all been too long by varying amounts. I've had to cut everything from about 1/2" to 4" from them, the English ones even more of course. Just lay the rubber around the frame, pushing in to the corners. Where the ends meet, you want about 1" extra in length. The temptation is to leave have more for a better seal, but the results of this can be seen above. |
