Hey

i pulled my head off and two of the push rods (i thyink they are called push rods - long skinny metal things, 8 all up) came up with the head around the 2nd & 3rd cylinders and the rest stayed in the block...
is this normal?

cheers James

Yeap, more importantly the cam followers have not come up and out with the pushrods, in which case you will need to open the tappet chest covers and put them back in (if you have a tappet chest cover! small bores and Cooper S big bores have them)

You should just be able to pop em back into the correct holes, keep them in the right order if possible...

take them all out of the block Monkey - put them back in after you put the head on - don't try to put the head on with them in the holes, and you have to take the rocker gear off the head (the rocker gear is the lever things on the shaft that the pushrods push up against to make the valves open)

What he said ^^^
You need to ensure you haven't accidentally bent any by removing the head this way- roll them along a flat surface to check.
